Director of Finance
Location: Highland Park, IL 60035
North Suburban Synagogue Beth El is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as its new Director of Finance. Reporting to the Executive Director and accountable to the Board’s Treasurer, this person will be responsible for NSSBE’s day-to-day financial management and accounting functions. Also, he/she will be responsible for initiating and maintaining the budgeting and financial reporting functions; with the assistance from the Treasurer, Executive Director, and Finance and Endowment Committee The position is supported by a two-person team.
The successful candidate must be able to work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director, clergy, staff, affiliates and the Board of Directors, and be able to integrate smoothly into NSSBE’s collaborative and inclusive culture. He/she must be passionate about NSSBE work, and be able to work in a collegial, supportive, and direct manner with their colleagues in a spirit of mutual trust.
The successful candidate must be a highly skilled and experienced financial professional who has held significant management positions for 8 to 10 years, ideally with a nonprofit or religious institution. This person is a strategic thinker and problem solver with a collaborative management style. The Director of Finance needs to have strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and be proficient with various computer software.
Specific Responsibilities include Cash Management of a $5 million dollar budget including bank balances, communicating with banking personnel, securing annual line of credit, making online transfers between accounts, monitoring stock donations, and their immediate sale from brokerage.
Collaborate with the Executive Director to set long and short-term financial objectives including the annual budget development and monitoring processes.
Maintain, monitor, and manage the fiscal budget.
Manage the daily accounting and reporting functions, including the billing and collection of the accounts receivable; supervise the accounts payable and purchasing systems, establishing, and enforcing proper controls and procedures.
Serve as a resource for the Board Treasurer and the Executive Director, regarding matters of fiscal control, , and monthly budget review meeting. Prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors and the appropriate committees, including the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees.
Oversee f information necessary to complete the annual internal financial statements.
Manage financial reporting functions including the preparation of financial statements, forecasting, cash flow, actual vs. budget reports & analyses; develop effective fiscal policies, systems and procedures for financial management, reporting, and auditing.
Maintain and coordinate employee benefits with the following: Health, Dental, Vision, 401(k), FSA)
Support Executive Director by reviewing and maintaining insurance policies with brokers.
Ensure all finance policies and procedures are documented, communicated and reflective of current practices and comply with all federal, state, and local rules .
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 8-10 years of financial management experience;
Experience in the non-profit sector and/or with religious institutions strongly preferred;
Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting; MBA/CPA a plus;
High level of emotional intelligence
Excellent skills in problem solving and critical analysis;
Strong business instincts, able to quickly identify problems, synthesize a variety of factors to make effective and practical decisions and develop an appropriate course of action;
Proven high standards of performance, eager to pursue aggressive goals, and works hard and smart to achieve them. Must be persistent, decisive, resourceful, proactive, and results-oriented;
Understands programmatic activity and has the ability to convey information to people with varying levels of financial expertise;
Strong written and oral communicator with excellent presentation and organizational skills;
Ability to work well in teams as well as independently and must be able to collaborate and build consensus internally and externally;
Strong attention to detail and ability to work well - within time constraints.
Proficient in financial modeling & accounting packages; must have knowledge of accounting software and systems;
Flexible work style and an interest in being part of a dynamic and evolving organization.
Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, Excel, PPT, Word, Outlook, One Drive
Knowledge of the Conservative Movement is desired, not required.
Having a working knowledge of Shul Cloud is highly desired, not required.
Other Information:
Projected salary range is: $115,000 to $130,000
