Reading Specialist for Elementary JDS
Location: Durham, NC 27705
Reports to: Head of School
Nature and Scope:
The Lerner Jewish Community Day School seeks an experienced and dynamic special education teacher with reading intervention expertise. The Special Education teacher is directly responsible for managing personal education plans, supporting students with push-in and pull-out supports, and supporting classroom teachers with meeting the needs of students with learning challenges. The Special Education teacher reports to the Elementary Principal, and will work closely with the Learning Specialists, classroom teachers, and principal.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degrees in Special Education (Master’s degree preferred)
- North Carolina Teaching License (or from a transferrable state)
- 5+ years working as a special educator in public or private schools
- Strong understanding of DEC process & hands-on experience working through special education IEP process with families
- Strong time management & communication skills (both oral and written)
- Work cooperatively with a variety of individuals and groups, both adults and children
- Ability to handle conflict calmly and effectively
Job Functions & Responsibilities:
- Support students in grades K-5
- Provide push-in & pull-out support services
- Point of contact for special education support consultants (occupational therapists, speech pathologists, school district officials, etc.)
- Writing and maintaining Personal Education Plans (PEP's) for all qualified students in cooperation with Lerner faculty and consultants
- Supporting families through the PEP and IEP processes
- Consult with classroom teachers as needed to provide the needed level of support for students
- Serve as a resource on special education best practices for classroom teachers (accommodations, adaptations, modifications, etc.)
- Team focused with the ability to inspire others
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
